Abhishek Sharma of Sunrisers Hyderabad became the latest hitter to surpass the 36-ball mark when he hammered a 28-ball hundred in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Meghalaya, breaking Rishabh Pant’s six-year-old record in T20 cricket for the second time in nine days.
The 24-year-old Punjab batsman, who was chasing 143 in Rajkot, delivered a scorching innings of 106 runs in only 29 balls, a scorching strike rate of 365.52, laced with 11 sixes. He tied Urvil Patel’s record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian batsman with the knock. The Gujarati cricketer, who went unsold in the IPL 2025 super auction for his base price of INR 30 lakh, blasted a 28-ball century against Tripura last week in a match against Syed Mushtaq Ali. Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who hammered a 27-ball century against Cyprus earlier this year, holds the record for the quickest T20 hundred.
Punjab was able to reach the mark in only 9.3 overs thanks to Abhishek’s undefeated 106.
The victory kept Punjab in fourth place in the Group A standings with 20 points from seven games, including five victories, while Meghalaya stayed at the bottom of the standings as they haven’t won in seven tournament games.
A significant change for Abhishek
For the SRH batsman, who had been having a poor run in international cricket, the hit against Meghalaya was a major turning point. Abhishek has only scored 156 runs in the last nine innings, including one half-century, after his incredible century against Zimbabwe in the second innings of his international career during the T20I series against Zimbabwe in July.
