The International Cricket Council on Thursday adopted the hybrid format for hosting the Champions Trophy in February 2025 and future ICC competitions that India and Pakistan would host, following several months of back-and-forth debate.
The ICC decision, however, states that the host board shall have the exclusive authority to choose the neutral location for India-Pakistan matches. The Champions Trophy schedule will be made public shortly, according to ICC.
The BCCI had stated its desire to play India’s matches in Dubai, but it had declined to play Champions Trophy matches in Pakistan for security considerations. According to TOI, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates have been identified as potential venues for India-Pakistan matches.
Because the Pakistan Cricket Board had protested the Champions Trophy’s hybrid concept, the case dragged on for months. After Jay Shah became the ICC chairman on December 1, the process of finding a solution accelerated. The PCB had insisted that a hybrid format be used for any ICC tournaments that India hosted in the future. The ICC’s board voted on the issue, and a resolution was approved as a result. On December 14, TOI stated that PCB has received compensation in the form of an ICC event.
Today, the ICC Board agreed that India-Pakistan matches at ICC Events, which are scheduled to take place in either India or Pakistan during the current rights cycle from 2024 to 2027, shall take place at a neutral location suggested by the tournament host. This will be applicable to the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 (India), the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 (Pakistan), and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 (India and Sri Lanka), the ICC said Thursday.
Furthermore, the PCB has been given the opportunity to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2028, with neutral venue preparations also being in place. Additionally, it said that Cricket Australia has been granted the opportunity to host one of the senior ICC women’s competitions from 2029 to 2031.
But it’s more likely that India matches will bring in more gate money to Dubai. The insider went on to say that Colombo is more likely to host the Women’s World Cup.
