Archer was first on the auction’s longlist but was later taken off the final shortlist after the ECB allegedly refused to give him his No Objection Certificate (NOC), telling him to concentrate on getting better before the Ashes series the following year. As the 38th English player on the final auction list, Archer unexpectedly joined the likes of experienced bowler James Anderson and white-ball captain Jos Buttler.
Since the 42-year-old has never played in an international franchise league, Anderson’s participation made headlines as England’s all-time top wicket-taker. Fast bowler Mark Wood, batsman Joe Root, and England Test captain Ben Stokes are among the notable people who did not attend the auction.
Archer’s involvement in professional cricket has been restricted due to injuries that have hampered his career in recent years. Since early 2021, he has not participated in any Test matches. Archer only played four games for the Mumbai Indians in the 2023 IPL season after being bought by them in the 2022 auction, despite his fitness issues. Archer had great success with the Rajasthan Royals prior to his time with Mumbai, therefore his return to the team was a much anticipated comeback.
