Sam Konstas and his brother played backyard cricket on Christmas Eve a couple of years ago. Now, the 19-year-old Australian is preparing for the renowned Boxing Day Test against India’s top bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. With the five-match series tied at 1-1, Konstas is set to make his Test debut in the high-stakes match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Despite the challenge of facing Bumrah, Konstas remains confident. “I do have a plan for Bumrah, but I’m not going to share it,” he said. “The goal is to apply pressure on the bowlers once again.” Konstas has not yet faced India’s bowling ace, as Bumrah was not present during the warm-up matches.
“All of them are world-class,” he remarked, choosing not to comment on the Indian attack. “I’m excited about the opportunity.” When asked about past Christmas Eves, Konstas smiled. “There used to be a lot of food, family, and backyard cricket with my brother,” he reminisced, adding that his family would be visiting soon for Christmas. For this young opener, the Boxing Day Test holds special significance. “Making my debut on this occasion is incredible; it’s a dream come true.
I just want to represent myself well and enjoy the occasion since my family will be there.” As a proud ambassador of his community, Konstas, who is of Greek descent, continues the legacy of tennis great Mark Philippoussis. “They’ve supported me through the highs and lows,” he reflected on the sacrifices made by his parents. “It means a lot to give back to them on this day.”
Motivated by Shane Watson, Konstas is known for his aggressive batting style and takes the comparison seriously. “Shane has taught me a lot. I love playing the game, and I want to emulate that when I make my debut.” Local hero Scott Boland famously dismissed Konstas in a domestic match, so he is no stranger to the MCG. “Playing on a sold-out Boxing Day is a dream come true, but it’s a bowler-friendly wicket,” he commented.
