Prior to the 2025 Indian Premier League, Rishabh Pant is expected to be selected captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Pant will serve as captain for the second time in his career. After unsuccessful negotiations with the Delhi Capitals (DC), who wanted to keep him but weren’t completely committed to having him lead, Pant decided to go back into the auction because leadership was the main point of contention.Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav, Ayush Badoni, and Mohsin Khan were the five players that LSG kept prior to the auction.
But they were searching for an Indian player to take Rahul’s spot as captain. They had Pant and Shreyas Iyer at the top of their list. They first defeated SRH in a tough bidding battle to purchase Pant at INR 20.75 crore during the auction, then increased that amount to INR 27 crore to end DC’s right-to-match challenge.
Pant, a 2016 DC player, assumed captaincy in the 2021 Indian Premier League and remained in command until the 2023 season, when he was sidelined due to injuries sustained in a potentially fatal vehicle accident in December 2022.The redesigned LSG team will include Indian seamers Avesh Khan and Akash Deep, as well as international batsmen Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and David Miller. Following the auction, Pooran, Marsh, Markram, and Miller were also considered as possible left-field captaincy choices.Pant will now collaborate closely with new team mentor Zaheer Khan and head coach Justin Langer, with whom he had both on and off the sidelines of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
