Prithvi Shaw is the adversary of himself: Mumbai Cricket speaks out against Vijay Hazare’s rejection

After Prithvi Shaw withdrew from the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) rejected his dramatic outburst, saying the temperamental batter is “his own enemy” and has regularly broken disciplinary rules. The insider disclosed that the squad was “forced to hide” Shaw on the field because of his serious fitness problems during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

“The ball would pass near him, and he would barely make an effort to reach it,” the official told the news agency PTI while remaining unnamed. He had trouble getting to the ball even while he was batting. We cannot have various regulations for different players, yet his mentality, discipline, and level of fitness are all missing.”

Shaw allegedly skipped training sessions and regularly returned to the team hotel at strange hours, raising worries about his performance off the field as well. Senior team members have been more irritated with these actions and have started to express their disapproval.

Prithvi Shaw, who was a member of Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy-winning team but was left out of the 16-man Vijay Hazare squad, resorted to social media to vent his dissatisfaction. The MCA official, however, downplayed the significance of such posts, stressing that public opinion would not affect the selectors’ choices. “Posts on social media won’t influence the MCA or the Mumbai selectors. The official said, “Shaw should concentrate on his game, not on winning people over.”

Shreyas Iyer, Shaw’s teammate and captain of Mumbai, also spoke out about the matter, giving direct counsel after Mumbai won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. “He needs to improve his work ethic. The possibilities are endless for him if he does,” Iyer remarked. “We are unable to watch anyone. Ultimately, he is responsible for solving the problem on his own.

With a spectacular Test debut in 2018, Prithvi made his cricket debut at the age of 18, striking a century against the West Indies. But since then, his career path has stalled. Only four more Test matches have been played by Shaw, and that was in 2020. He hasn’t played in any international white-ball matches since 2021, and his ODI and T20I outings have also been few.

To make matters worse, Shaw failed to sell in the IPL auction even though he had set a low base price of Rs 75 lakh. The guy who was once heralded as Indian cricket’s next major star suffered yet another setback.

The cricket world is disappointed that Prithvi Shaw hasn’t been able to reach his full potential. “Shaw has no enemies. The MCA official summed up the attitude about the athlete by saying, “He is his own enemy.”
