On the third day of their Elite Group D Ranji Trophy encounter here on Saturday, all-rounder Vijay Shankar hammered an undefeated 150 as Tamil Nadu drew in on an outright victory after declaring at 305 for 5 and reduced Chandigarh to 113 for 5. As Tamil Nadu recovered from a mini-collapse to set Chandigarh a tough mark of 403, Shankar hit 12 fours and five sixes in his 171-ball innings. Narayan Jagadeesan also contributed 89 at the top of the table.
Shankar scored his second century of the season and his eleventh first-class century overall.
After being bowled out for 204 in their opening innings, Chandigarh was put in a difficult position as they were reduced to 113 for 5 in 33 overs. Even though captain Manan Vohra was struggling at 47, his side needed to win by 290 runs.
Vohra and Vishu Kashyap (4) were at the crease at stumps.
M Mohammed (1/13) claimed one wicket for Tamil Nadu, while captain Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore (2/38) and S Ajith Ram (2/46) each claimed two.
When the game resumed at 27 for 2, overnight batsman Jagadeesan saw Baba Indrajith (3) and Ajith Ram (7) get out cheaply.
The innings was then steadied by Shankar’s 152-run partnership with Jagadeesan. With an undefeated 36, Andre Siddarth also made a contribution.
Chhattisgarh leads Jharkhand by 59 runs.
In Jamshedpur, Chhattisgarh reached 205 for 4 in their second innings, taking a 59-run lead against Jharkhand on day three with to fifties from Anuj Tiwary (66) and Ashutosh Singh (64).
Resuming at 304 for 4, Jharkhand was dismissed for 376 in 118.2 overs.
The best bowler was Sumit Ruikar (4/87), with Ashish Chouhan and Gagandeep Singh each taking two wickets. In the first innings, Jharkhand had taken a 146-run advantage.
Sanjeet Desai was on 23 at stumps, while Gagandeep Singh had not yet scored.
In Assam’s 175 for 4, Ghadigaonkar scores 100 not out.
After dismissing Railways for 250 on day 3, Assam reached 175 for 4, with Sumit Ghadigaonkar (100*) celebrating an undefeated century and Sibsankar Roy (56), who also hit a fifty.
Ghadigaonkar was batting with Swarupam Puryayastha at stumps (15).
Assam is presently 75 runs behind.
